Young at Heart

Charlestown: Young at Heart plans to visit Charlestown, S.C., Oct. 22-25.

"Founded in 1670, the beautiful port city of Charleston is a premier gem of the South. It is defined by its cobblestone streets, horse-drawn carriages and pastel antebellum houses, particularly in the elegant French Quarter and Battery districts. We will have a guided bus tour."

Cost: $350

Deposit: $50

Due: 9-22-24

Sign Up: See Sylvia Wade

NOTE:

  • "We will visit the earliest Baptist church in the South. It was launched in 1682 in Kittery, Maine. But in 1696, the pastor William Screven, and 28 members of the Kittery congregation immigrated to Charleston, SC."
  • "By ferry-boat, we will visit the starting point of the Civil War. Confederate forces fired the first shots upon Federal troops at Fort Sumter at 4:30 a.m. on April 12, 1861. Fort Sumter would continue to serve as the focal point in Charleston throughout the Civil War."
  • "We will board an American heroine: The USS Yorktown, the tenth Navy aircraft carrier. Built in a record 16.5 months at Newport News, VA, the “Fighting Lady” would participate significantly in the Pacific during WWII. The ship notably recovered the Apollo 8 astronauts in December, 1968."
